The WHY behind our WiFi policy

Finding Balance – Technology vs Real Connection

At Stehekin Valley Ranch, our deepest hope is that you leave here more relaxed, more connected to the people around you, and maybe even a little more connected to yourself. Technology is wonderful, but it can also keep us from the very things that make a place like this magical: unhurried conversations, shared laughter at the dinner table, kids chasing each other through the grass, and the simple joy of looking up at the mountains instead of down at a screen.

That’s why we’ve made a deliberate choice: strong WiFi is available (we have Starlink!), but only in a designated area away from the  main gathering spaces. We’re not anti-technology—we’re pro-presence. We want this to remain one of the last places where “out of service” feels like a gift instead of a problem.

Here’s what we’ve seen over the years when phones stay in pockets:

  • Strangers become dinner-table friends who swap stories until the stars come out.
  • Families play cards or tell jokes instead of scrolling in silence.
  • Kids (and adults) rediscover how much fun it is to be bored together.
  • The stress you arrived with melts faster when no one is pulling you back into the outside world.

We’re not asking you to time-travel to 1995 forever — just while you’re here. Think of it as a short, voluntary digital detox in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Official WiFi Policy – Stehekin Valley Ranch

We’re happy to provide fast, reliable Starlink internet with a few simple guidelines designed to keep the Ranch feeling like the Ranch:

  1. Please restrict WiFi usage to the designated zone only (marked on the facility map found in the information book in your cabin).
    * This keeps foot traffic away from guest cabins and preserves everyone’s privacy and peace.
    * You’ll get the strongest, fastest signal right there—no need to wander.
    * Feel free to use WiFi from inside your own cabin if the signal reaches (some near the zone do). Just no lingering outside anyone else’s cabin looking for bars.
  2. Please do not bring or set up personal satellite systems (Starlink, etc.).
    * Extra dishes and cables detract from the natural beauty we all come here to enjoy.
    * They also create tripping hazards, especially with kids running free (which we love!).
  3. The Cookhouse/Dining Room is a device-free zone.
    *
Even if your phone can connect via satellite, we kindly ask that it stays in your pocket or back in the cabin while using this building for meals and other social gatherings.
    * This is where the best conversations happen—let’s keep that tradition alive.

That’s it. Three small requests in exchange for big, deep breaths of mountain air and the kind of evenings you’ll talk about for years.

Thank you for helping us protect what makes this place so special. We can’t wait to see you put your phone down and pick up a real connection instead.
